Why a Log Home is a Smart Investment

Log homes are woven into the fabric of who we are as Americans. In our youngest years, we grow up hearing stories about Abraham Lincoln’s humble beginnings in a hewed cabin and reading about the simple log home life in Little House on the Prairie. There is a certain nostalgia and charm that comes with log homes. But beyond the pleasant feelings, there are solid reasons for investing in a cabin from Ward Cedar Log Homes. Here are three reasons to consider, centering around finances, family and your health:
Money Wise
As with any custom home, building a log cabin is a significant financial investment. Thankfully, log homes have stood the test of time through the ups and downs of the traditional real estate market.
From the beginning of the log home building process, you are making smart money moves. To build a log home you need land — and, often, this land is in a beautiful locale, such as the mountains or beside a lake. As the old saying goes, “They’re not making any more of it.” There is truth to the fact that most any property you purchase will gain in value over time, but a property in a desirable setting will usually appreciate to an even greater degree.
Once you build a log home on that property, you have become the proud owner of a rare commodity, and, as a result, often have instant positive equity. As the rule of supply and demand goes, there are generally very few log homes in any given market, causing them to be appraised at a higher price per square foot and priced higher than a conventional build of the same size.
Family Matters
Investing in time with family is always worthwhile. The memories that we make with our children, parents, and extended relatives live on long past the actual moments spent together. While families can come together in a variety of settings, log homes have a unique way of putting people at ease and creating the kind of environment that is conducive to slowing down and connecting.
Plus, when you choose Ward, your ability to create a totally custom home means that you can design spaces that are designed for the way your family interacts. Maybe that means including a spacious kitchen where everyone can gather around a large island, an outdoor living area with a fire pit for roasting s’mores and stargazing, or, our personal favorite, a rocking-chair front porch made for swapping stories. Or perhaps your crew would best benefit from a casual recreation space outfitted with game tables or a media center. Of course, including all of the above is an option, too, when you design with Ward.
Healthy Living
Of all the things we can invest in in life, our health is one of the most worthwhile. Did you know that the type of interiors that you live in can impact your quality of life in a very real way? A building movement called “wellness architecture” centers around demonstrating how the structures we live in have a tangible influence on our mental and even physical well-being.
There has been research into the negative health effects of spaces that are composed primarily of synthetic elements. It is documented that airborne toxins, known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released from materials like drywall, carpet, and vinyl flooring for years after installation, potentially causing long-term health issues.
As you would expect, log homes avoid many of these issues because they are made primarily of organic materials. Every Ward log home is built with our northern white cedar logs, and most often, our clients choose real hardwood flooring.
Additionally, living in a home that is constructed with wood creates an instant sense of calm and connectedness to nature that has been shown to reduce stress levels and boost mood. If you’ve ever felt that “ahhh” feeling after walking into a log home, you have experienced wellness architecture — and the benefits of log home living — in real time.
