Think for a moment about the places in your home where you spend the most time. It’s likely that your great room, kitchen or bedroom came to mind. But did you know that the average person spends around 180 hours per year in the bathroom? With so much time spent in this spot, it’s important that your bathroom — and particularly your master bathroom — is a space you enjoy.
We’re here to help you design a bathroom that is equal parts form and function. Keep reading for our top tips and guidelines for designing an en-suite bathroom you’re sure to love:
Function First
When creating a layout for your master bathroom, begin by thinking about who will be using the space. If there are two of you, you may want to include a separate water closet for extra privacy, along with “his and hers” vanities to ensure everyone has ample space to get ready for the day concurrently, as well as store their personal toiletries.
Next, decide if a shower, tub or a combination of the two is best for you. If space is at a premium, you may need to opt for a dual shower and tub, but if the area allows, a walk-in shower and/or sunken tub will give your space an instant sense of spa-like luxury.
Depending on your needs, you may want to consider extra amenities like a bench in your shower or a sit-down makeup vanity. While many homeowners include access to walk-in closets from their master bathroom, some take it to the next level by connecting a laundry room or personal home gym to the space.
Finish Strong
While the bathroom is first a utilitarian space, the “form” of the room deserves attention, too. After all, it’s often the first area you visit in the morning and the last one you see at night. While the possibilities are nearly endless — a quick Internet search for “master bathroom ideas” yields almost infinite results — here are some things we consider “musts” when it comes to good bathroom design:
Let the light in. When building a log home, framing the views is a must — those prow windows in the great room or the window placed perfectly above the kitchen sink are a no-brainer. But adding a window into your master suite is smart, too. If your property allows for privacy, a generously-sized window will allow you to enjoy views from your shower or while soaking in your sunken tub. If privacy is key in your space, transom windows can wake up your morning routine with a dose of natural light.
Add architectural details. While many log homeowners reserve high-impact architectural details for the public spaces of their home, we think you deserve something special in your private sanctuary, too. One idea: raise the ceilings in your bathroom then hang a special light fixture, such as a chandelier, to create a feeling of luxury. (On a utilitarian note: this can also help create a more comfortable space, as warm, humid air rises. Just be sure to install an adequate bathroom vent.) If a vaulted ceiling isn’t an option, a recessed area above the tub can feel special with minimal impact to your design.
Focus on finishes. Choosing finishes for your bathroom, such as the flooring, shower materials, plumbing fixtures and cabinetry, can feel overwhelming. There are virtually limitless options and combinations. To hone in on what is right for your space, first narrow down the feeling you hope to create and your ideal color palette. Do you want the space to be bright and fresh? Or is a cozy, more intimate feel your preference? Once you’ve settled on a scene, let that image guide you in your finish selection.
