About Ward Cedar Log Homes

Our Past. Your Future

You may have pictured this home for years. A place on land you love, with room for family and a layout that fits the way you want to live.

Choosing who will help you create it is a big decision.

Since 1923, Ward Cedar Log Homes has helped people take that next step. We manufacture Northern White Cedar homes in Houlton, Maine. We help you develop your ideas, understand your choices, and plan a home that feels like yours.

It began with one cedar cabin

In 1923, Maine lumberman Bruce Ward was supplying cedar utility poles to a telegraph company. He selected some of those poles, cut and notched them, and built himself a lakeside log cabin.

Friends and neighbors soon wanted cabins of their own.

As the business grew, Bruce developed interlocking log joinery that helped shape the precut log home industry. That first cabin became the beginning of Ward Cedar Log Homes.

Today, Ward’s history includes more than 10,000 homes, cabins, and commercial buildings. Each started with someone’s idea of what their property could become.

Experience in the details

Our manufacturing operation includes a sawmill and planing mill designed to work with cedar. Our team handles log selection, milling, and production here in Houlton.

For your builder, preparation matters. Ward supplies precut, labeled components to help identify materials and understand where they belong during construction.

For your full-log home, the connections between those materials matter just as much. Our Comfort System 5 combines Northern White Cedar, tongue-and-groove joinery, a milled drip edge, gasket material, backer rod, and exterior caulking. These details work together to help limit air and water infiltration through the log joints.

We want you to understand how your home goes together and why those details deserve attention.

Making good use of the cedar we mill

Working with wood means thinking carefully about how we use it.

Along with our home components, we use remaining wood for products such as trim, railing, and paneling. Wood that doesn’t meet our product grades goes to uses such as mulch.

These practices help us put more of the material to use. They’re a practical part of how we approach manufacturing and responsibility to the resources we work with.

Your home should reflect your life

Your priorities might start with a kitchen large enough for family gatherings. You may want a main-floor bedroom, a screened porch overlooking the water, or space for a hobby you finally have time to enjoy.

Bring those ideas with you.

Start with a Ward floor plan, your own sketch, or a few features you’ve collected along your way. Our design team can help you explore changes with your land, budget, and daily life in mind.

We also offer full-log and hybrid log home options. We’ll explain the differences so you can consider the construction approach and finishes that fit your project.

Find a Floor Plan to Make Your Own

From a piece of land to a home of their own

For Mark and Kristen DeSouza, the process began with land overlooking a lake in New Hampshire.

They developed their own design and visited another Ward home during construction. Seeing the materials and wall system come together helped them understand both the home and the work involved.

Their experience also came down to the people helping them along the way.

Ron Silliboy was always willing to help us with any design issues and through the production and delivery process.
