Window of Opportunity

Make the most of your home’s views with the right windows

All beautiful works of art deserve an equally beautiful frame.  Think of the windows in your home as just that.  They frame the views beyond your home, and as such, can have a dramatic impact on the way you experience the world from inside your home.

To ensure you have a top notch viewing experience — whether your home is nestled into the woods, at water’s edge or perched alongside a hilltop — all of our log packages come with quality 200 or 400-series Andersen windows.  (Both options come with a vinyl-clad exterior that stands up readily to environmental element but have a varying degree of color and customization options.)

While it may seem at first glance that a window is a window, the placement, size, and style you choose will have a significant impact on the look and feel of your home inside and out.  Our Ward Cedar design team will assist you in the window selections process, but to get ahead of the game, consider these guidelines for choosing the right windows for your home.

1) Bring the views into focus.

You’ve found the perfect lot with stunning views that beg to be enjoyed.  Now, maximizing those vistas is the objective.  For a prow front in a great room, fixed windows are the standard.  In other home styles, floor-to-ceiling windows or even sliding glass doors may fit the bill for rooms where scenery is the big draw.  (Check out our Georgetown design for inspiration.)  If you opt for traditional casement windows (available in sizes up to 8-feet!), just be sure to skip the grilles to ensure unobstructed views.

2) Select the right styles.

Good design is in the details.  Customizing the color and grille patterns of your windows will add another layer of architectural detail to your home.  The 400 series offers seven colors, including a striking black that would bring a modern edge to a timber hybrid and a forest green that would add woodsy charm to a traditional log home.  For rooms where views don’t reign supreme, adding grilles in a square colonial, prairie-style or diamond pattern can serve as a welcome decorative feature and boost curb appeal.

3) Add the fun factor.

Rectangular windows — from easy-to-clean casements to gliding windows to the ever-popular double-hung variety — are the standard fare in any residential home.  Shake up tradition by adding a specialty window or two to your design. ( See how we used architectural windows to stunning effect in our Heartwood plan.)  Eyebrow arches above a front door, an octagon in a powder bathroom or a custom cathedral-style pattern over a stairwell will make a style statement inside and out.

Whatever design you’re after — a timber hybrid with seamless spans of glass or a cozy cabin with charming diamond-patterned panes — we are ready to help you design the home of your dreams.
