Protecting Your Log Home from Carpenter Bees
Posted by Ward Cedar Log Homes in Log HomesIf you live in a log home or have any wood structures such as decks, porches, fascia trim, etc. you want to protect your investment from Carpenter Bees. What are carpenter bees? They are bees that can grow up to 1 inch long. They are attracted to most types of wood and will bore holes by buzzing loudly, but any stinging is rare. Their nests attract woodpeckers that can cause more damage to wood. It’s important to take precautionary steps.
Now you could take the hard route and swat at the bees and become a tennis pro by the time you are done. Or you can take an easier path and treat your log home. In the past, Borax was commonly used; however Borax is toxic to birds and other wildlife. A more green approach is using a product called NBS 30.
NBS 30 is an additive that you can add in stains/paint that stops insects from crawling on, or burrowing into the wood. It is a natural product so it is safe for pets and people and will not harm plants. You just add it to your stain each time you stain your log home. It works best with a penetrating finish so it can work its way past the surface. You can also use NBS 30 as a topical treatment by mixing it with water.
NBS 30 can be found online at www.totalwoodcare.com along with other stain products. Taking the time to care for you log home upfront will save you a lot of time down the road.
