What to Expect From the Log Home Building Process, from Delivery Day to Move-in Day and Beyond-Part II

With all the planning and prepping of your dream home accomplished, it’s time to move into the building stage of your dream home journey. Here is a timeline of what you can expect:

1.  Beginning Your Build (aka erecting the shell)

We often hear that delivery day — when your logs, floor, wall and roof systems and other materials arrive — feels like Christmas morning. It’s no surprise: with months (or years!) of saving, planning and anticipation behind you, it’s an exciting day. Once the building materials have been unloaded at your home site and organized, your crew will get to work putting up the shell. Depending on the size of your home and weather conditions, this phase is often finished within a few weeks.

2.  The Rough-In

With your home’s frame in place, things are beginning to take shape. Now it’s time to install the mechanical elements of the home, including electrical, plumbing and HVAC, along with windows and doors. This is referred to as the rough-in. While your tradespeople will be carrying the bulk of the hands-on work, you have a significant role to play in this stage. It is imperative that you green-light your electrical or plumbing plan (made during the design phase) once and for all. Any adjustments after this point will only be more costly and time-consuming. For example, if you plan to install pop-up outlets in your kitchen countertops, accent lighting in your cathedral ceiling or a hard-wired security system, these decisions will need to show up on your electrical layout plan, so the logs can be drilled and notched accordingly. Plan for a week or two for each step of this process, and more if any changes are made.

3. Finish Strong

This last stage of construction is often the lengthiest; there is lots to do! Allow for a few months for your log home to take its final form. Not only will it be finished on the exterior — with insulation, trim work, decks, porches and exterior lighting and hardware being added — but your interiors will transform from a shell into a beautiful, finished log home. Every interior product you have chosen will find a landing place during this final phase, from flooring, cabinetry and countertops to light fixtures, plumbing fixtures and appliances. Lastly, don’t forget to look to the spaces around your home; adding landscaping or hardscaping elements will lend eye-catching appeal and bring your home to completion.

Your dream log home is finally finished! There is nothing left on the agenda — except for you to enjoy the fruits of your labor. We’ll check back in with you at your one-year anniversary mark, but until then, happy log home living!
